Astrotech submits 6kW lunar power infrastructure proposal to NASA
(SpaceEnergy) Astrotech has submitted a NASA proposal with Skycorp for a lunar electricity distribution system designed to transfer 6kW over 100m, with bidirectional power flow and a 10kW startup surge.
The US company announced its Astrotech Vertical Solar Array Maturation (AVSAM) proposal under NASA's Next Space Technologies for Exploration Partnerships-3 (NextSTEP-3) Lunar Enabling Infrastructure Accelerator programme.
The proposed development would advance elements of Astrotech's Mobile Power System from Technology Readiness Level 4 to Level 6 through design, prototype integration and environmental testing.
The architecture uses a proposed 120V direct-current interface, incorporating power controllers, management and distribution equipment, low-temperature cabling, connectors and thermal protection for lunar polar conditions.
It would also provide local telemetry, fault isolation and intelligent management of multiple electricity sources and users, supporting power distribution between lunar surface equipment.
If NASA selects the proposal, Skycorp would lead systems engineering and technical development. Astrotech would provide facilities, procurement and programme financial management.
The proposed development programme would culminate in an integrated system test at Astrotech's facilities in Austin, Texas.
Astrotech is separately evaluating a commercial Lunar Utilities Corporation business that could provide electricity distribution, energy storage and robotic charging services to government and private lunar customers.
