Catalyst supplier Heraeus details materials for space propulsion

(SpaceEnergy) Precious-metals specialist Heraeus has detailed heterogeneous catalyst materials designed for spacecraft chemical propulsion, targeting ignition reliability, thermal stability and longer thruster operating life.

Heraeus Precious Metals said its approach combines precious-metal chemistry, catalyst-support engineering and scalable manufacturing to produce heterogeneous catalysts tailored for aerospace propulsion applications.

In monopropellant thrusters, catalysts initiate rapid propellant decomposition without a separate external ignition source. Heraeus said catalyst performance and degradation therefore directly affect ignition reliability, response time, thermal stability and propulsion-system lifetime.

The development represents an upstream materials contribution to spacecraft propulsion, where catalyst composition and support structures can materially influence thruster performance and durability.

Heraeus presented the work through the Small Satellite Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. The official conference record is dated 26 August 2026.
