Czech defence group CSG becomes largest shareholder in MDA Space
(SpaceEnergy) Czech industrial and defence group Czechoslovak Group (CSG) has acquired a 9.5% stake in Canadian space technology company MDA Space, becoming its largest shareholder in a development relevant to European space exchange-traded funds.
CSG announced the investment on 13 October, describing it as a strategic entry into the space sector.
The company did not disclose the acquisition price or identify the sellers.
MDA Space, listed in Toronto and New York, develops satellite systems, space robotics and geointelligence technologies for commercial and government customers.
CSG said the investment could lead to industrial cooperation, including joint investment in European spacecraft manufacturing and assembly facilities, strategic acquisitions and commercial partnerships.
These possibilities remain under consideration, with no binding manufacturing or acquisition agreements announced.
The investment is relevant to European space-focused exchange-traded funds (ETFs) holding MDA Space shares.
MDA Space represented 5.36% of the VanEck Space Innovators UCITS ETF (JEDI) portfolio and 5.06% of the Global X Space Tech UCITS ETF (LUNR) portfolio in issuer disclosures dated 9 September 2026. These historical weights may have changed.
CSG also announced the creation of a dedicated space-sector team, appointing former NATO space adviser Ladislav Stahl as head of space strategy and technology.
MDA Space chief executive Mike Greenley welcomed the investment, highlighting opportunities to strengthen the company's European industrial and customer relationships.
The transaction represents a change in MDA Space's shareholder structure rather than a direct capital investment into the company's operations.
No immediate changes to MDA Space's existing programmes, manufacturing capacity or financial guidance were announced.
