Dawn wins Aule Space contract for docking propulsion system
(SpaceEnergy) Dawn Aerospace has signed a commercial contract to supply a customised SatDrive propulsion system for Aule Space’s planned autonomous rendezvous and non-cooperative satellite docking demonstration.
The agreement converts a recently signed memorandum of understanding between the companies into a binding hardware contract. Dawn said its propulsion system will use nitrous oxide and propene to provide the responsive manoeuvring required during rendezvous, proximity operations and docking.
Bengaluru-based Aule Space is developing autonomous “jetpack” satellites intended to dock with existing spacecraft, including satellites that were not designed with cooperative docking interfaces. The company plans applications including station-keeping, life extension, inspection and debris mitigation.
The demonstration vehicle is intended to autonomously approach and dock with a passive target satellite without active rendezvous assistance from the target. Dawn will deliver the propulsion system ahead of the planned demonstration mission. The companies did not disclose a launch date or contract value.
“Dawn’s responsive system will give our demonstration vehicle the precise control required for rendezvous and docking,” Aule chief executive Jay Panchal said.
Dawn said its propulsion systems are currently operating aboard 55 satellites.
