HyImpulse wins UK launch licence for hybrid-propelled SR75
(SpaceEnergy) HyImpulse has received a UK launch operator licence covering its hybrid-propelled SR75 suborbital rocket and future SL1 orbital launches from SaxaVord Spaceport in Scotland.
The licence from the UK Civil Aviation Authority establishes HyImpulse as a licensed launch operator under the Space Industry Act framework and follows regulatory assessment of the company's systems, procedures and safety case.
HyImpulse said the approval provides the framework for its SR75 programme and future launches of its larger SL1 orbital vehicle from SaxaVord on Unst in the Shetland Islands.
SR75 uses HyImpulse's hybrid propulsion technology, combining a solid paraffin-based fuel with liquid oxygen. The suborbital vehicle is intended for research and technology-demonstration payloads and also serves as a technology pathfinder for SL1.
Chief executive and co-founder Christian Schmierer said the licence "validates years of work by our teams and partners", adding that SR75 was ready for flight and major technical and operational preparations had been completed.
HyImpulse and the CAA must still complete operational activities required before launch. The company said that, taking those remaining activities and seasonal weather conditions into account, it is preparing for an SR75 flight in spring 2027.
Development of SL1 is continuing in parallel.
