ISRO takes SE2000 semi-cryogenic engine powerhead to full thrust
(SpaceEnergy) The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has hot-fired its SE2000 semi-cryogenic engine powerhead at full thrust for the first time, advancing development of the liquid-oxygen/kerosene SC120 propulsion stage for LVM3.
The Power Head Test Article reached its 200-tonne, 100% thrust level during a 35-second test at the ISRO Propulsion Research Complex in Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu, on 5 September. It operated at full thrust for five seconds.
ISRO said all engine parameters performed as predicted. The test also validated switching propellant supply from a low-pressure start tank to a medium-pressure run tank, a configuration intended to support longer-duration powerhead tests.
The powerhead incorporates the engine systems apart from the thrust chamber. It was the ninth hot-fire in the test series and followed successful operation at 47%, 60% and 88% thrust.
The 2,000kN-class SE2000 engine is being developed for the SC120 semi-cryogenic stage, which is intended to replace LVM3’s current L110 liquid core stage. ISRO plans to combine SC120 with an uprated C32 cryogenic upper stage to increase the launch vehicle’s payload capability.
