JAXA reopens ¥19.5 billion rocket supply-chain call

(SpaceEnergy) Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency has opened an additional funding call supporting mass production, miniaturisation and cost reduction of rocket components, propellants and related supply-chain technologies.

The additional call forms part of the second phase of Japan’s Space Strategy Fund programme for technologies enabling higher-frequency launch. Applications close at noon Japan time on 19 November.

JAXA lists the overall support scale for the technology theme at ¥19.5 billion, covering about 10 projects for periods of up to four years.

The agency said strengthening supply chains for components and fuels capable of serving multiple launch vehicles is necessary to establish a higher-frequency domestic space transportation system. The programme also targets improved launch performance, satellite payload efficiency and lower launch prices.

Existing projects selected under the theme include Air Water’s development of higher-efficiency liquefied biomethane production for rocket fuel, targeting annual production of at least 1,000 tonnes, alongside work on rocket turbopump seals, lightweight pressure vessels and thrust-vector-control equipment.
