JAXA seeks concepts for $62,600 lunar solar-power tower study

(SpaceEnergy) JAXA has opened a competition for concept-design work towards a lunar solar-cell tower, with two contractors due to be selected for studies running to March 2027.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency issued the procurement on 2 September for “concept design toward the realisation of a lunar solar-cell tower”. The work is intended to advance the design of a solar-power structure for lunar operations.

JAXA set an upper proposal price of ¥10 million ($62,600), including tax and specified cost adjustments, and plans to select two contractors. Proposals above the ceiling will not be accepted.

Tender documents are available until 5 October, with proposals due by 12:00 Japan time on 9 October. JAXA expects to select the contractors on 21 October.

The contracted concept-design work is scheduled to be completed by 31 March 2027.
