KORUCUSAT-2 to test silicon-anode battery in orbit
(SpaceEnergy) KORUCUSAT-2 will monitor the behaviour of a silicon-anode battery in low Earth orbit, supported by a newly developed spacecraft power simulation framework.
Researchers developed a FreeFlyer-based model to assess the CubeSat’s electrical power margins before launch. The spacecraft uses body-mounted solar panels, with five modules installed on each of its +X, -X, +Y and -Y faces.
The simulation incorporates orbital propagation, eclipses, solar-incidence angles, ground-station visibility and mode-dependent subsystem loads. Battery energy and state of charge are recalculated every 30 seconds to assess stored-energy margins during critical, low-power, operations and transmission modes.
The work provides a pre-launch test framework for KORUCUSAT-2’s electrical power system while supporting the mission’s planned in-space monitoring of silicon-anode battery behaviour.
The paper became publicly available through the Small Satellite Conference repository on 22 August.
