Pale Blue seeks to cancel Axelspace thruster demonstration contract
(SpaceEnergy) Pale Blue has asked to cancel a contract with Axelspace for an in-orbit demonstration of its fast-start Hall thruster after technical problems arose with the satellite intended to host the experiment.
Pale Blue sent Axelspace written notice seeking cancellation of the in-orbit demonstration services agreement originally executed in December 2025.
The Japanese propulsion company said specific technical issues had arisen with the satellite being developed by Axelspace for the project. It determined that continuing under the existing contract would be difficult after the companies had worked towards executing the planned demonstration.
Pale Blue and Axelspace began discussions over the contract on 6 October.
The original programme called for a 2027 in-orbit demonstration using Axelspace's AxelLiner Laboratory service. Pale Blue's fast-start Hall thruster was the payload intended for the mission.
Pale Blue said it would pursue other opportunities aimed at securing an early in-orbit demonstration of its products.
The announcement represents a material change to the previously contracted flight-demonstration route rather than confirmation that the contract has already been terminated. Pale Blue did not disclose the precise satellite technical problem, financial implications or a replacement demonstration provider or schedule.
