Rocket Lab builds new engine test facility to accelerate launch operations

(SpaceEnergy) Rocket Lab is constructing a new rocket-engine test facility designed to reduce integrated static-fire testing for its Electron and HASTE launch vehicles from two to three days to less than one day.

The company disclosed construction progress on 22 October, publishing photographs of the new test pad within its existing Propulsion Test Complex.

The facility is intended to double testing capacity and support an increased launch cadence in 2027.

Rocket Lab said the installation will replace its established high-temperature ceramic exhaust ramp design with a stainless-steel, water-cooled structure capable of absorbing the intense thermal loads and forces generated during engine firings.

The new facility is also designed for all-weather operations, reducing the potential for weather-related interruptions to testing schedules.

Rocket Lab said it has more than 100 launches in its backlog, including missions using its Electron orbital launcher and HASTE suborbital vehicle.

The company is expanding ground-testing infrastructure to accommodate growing demand while maintaining integrated propulsion testing before launch.

The facility remains under construction. Rocket Lab has not disclosed its investment cost, precise location, commissioning date or maximum testing throughput.
