Solar-array startup Beyond Reach unveils 200kW Flarewing
(SpaceEnergy) US space-power startup Beyond Reach Labs has unveiled Flarewing, a family of deployable structures designed to support spacecraft solar arrays generating up to 200kW per wing.
The Brooklyn, New York-based company is offering three configurations spanning small spacecraft to orbital infrastructure. Flarewing-S deploys to 30m² and supports up to 5kW using silicon cells or 8kW with triple-junction cells.
Flarewing-M deploys to 180m² and supports up to 35kW with silicon cells or 55kW with triple-junction cells, while the 625m² Flarewing-L supports up to 125kW or 200kW respectively.
Beyond Reach said the system addresses structural-dynamics constraints that emerge as spacecraft solar arrays become larger. Its architecture is intended to provide high deployed stiffness while allowing large structures to pack into relatively compact launch volumes.
The company identifies high-power satellites, commercial space stations, orbital data centres and lunar infrastructure among its target applications.
