Space Solar targets orbital power for data infrastructure

(SpaceEnergy) UK space-based solar power developer Space Solar has signed a letter of intent with US company Lonestar to explore hosting sovereign data

storage systems on orbital power platforms, expanding the potential applications of space-based energy infrastructure beyond electricity generation.

The companies aim to integrate Lonestar’s StarVault data storage modules with Space Solar’s planned spacecraft, combining orbital power generation with resilient, off-Earth data storage. Planned deployments could span low Earth, medium Earth and geostationary orbits, according to the companies.

Space Solar said the collaboration aligns with its strategy of developing large in-space assembled platforms capable of supplying continuous power for multiple orbital services. The agreement is intended to support future missions, including the company’s OSPREY Builder demonstrator, while providing the power and hosting capacity needed for distributed data infrastructure in space.

For Lonestar, which is developing sovereign space-based data storage for governments and critical infrastructure customers, the partnership could provide a scalable power source as it expands its orbital network. The companies said the initiative is designed to support secure data services in space, although the letter of intent does not constitute a binding commercial agreement.
